Victoria Now Home of the First STEaM Middle School in Canada

Elizabeth Buckley School now accepting applications

May 14, 2015
VICTORIA, BC – For enthusiastic middle school students with a preference for learning through discovery and authentic experiences, this is one school to get excited about.

Built on the excellent reputation of its independent elementary school, Elizabeth Buckley School is excited to announce the opening of its new affordable middle school for grades six to eight. The school, which follows the BC curriculum, is accepting applications for September 2015.

The middle school’s unique hands-on, creative, and experiential learning method infused with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEaM) is the first in Canada. Its approach de-emphasizes the memorization of facts and emphasizes full engagement in learning. It allows all students – from those who are gifted to those who need extra support – to experience success in a respectful learning environment.

Other key attributes of the school are small class sizes with low student-to-teacher ratios, and individualized programming. “The number of students in our daughter’s classroom allows for individual attention to be given to every child, every day,” said Sheri Hoyland. “The school understands that each child grows and develops in their own unique way and they are respected and treated as individuals. We could not imagine having a better education for our child,” added Nicole Skoreyko.

At Elizabeth Buckley School, “everyone gets what they need, and everyone’s needs are different,” explained Roberta MacDonald, the school’s principal, who has over 20 years’ experience as an educator and is the former Director of Science Venture, University of Victoria’s Science, Engineering and Technology outreach program. “We regularly partner with faculty and programs at the university to enhance the curriculum. This provides our students with opportunities to meet and learn about the work of real scientists, engineers and artists in their own community.”

For students who have not fully flourished in their current school setting, parents may find this an opportune time to provide an alternate learning environment. The new school will open this September in downtown Victoria at Nootka Court, close to Beacon Hill Park, playing fields, the YMCA, the Royal BC Museum, and the ocean. It will join the Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry, an independent high school, in a shared learning space. “The STEAM school concept at EBS, especially now that it will extend to the middle years, offers a natural foundation for the interdisciplinary, inquiry-based learning we do at PSII and beyond,” said Jeff Hopkins, PSII’s founder and principal educator.
